GULFSTREAM EXPANDS TO MAINTAIN TECHNOLOGY LEAD IN BUSINESS AVIATION INDUSTRY
750 Gulfstream Engineers To Work at New Gulfstream Research and Development Center'
SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 20, 2005 – Gulfstream Aerospace is expanding its research and development organization by leasing a new 100,000 square-foot building where some 750 engineers will be relocated from various buildings at the Savannah , Ga. , manufacturing facility. Gulfstream expects to occupy the building in March 2006.
“For the past decade, Gulfstream has led the business aviation industry in technological advancements that enhance passenger safety and aircraft reliability and performance,” said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. “With our continued R&D efforts on advanced avionics, advanced cabin technologies, synthetic vision and sonic boom suppression, we expect this expansion will allow us to maintain our market leadership in this industry.”
The Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System, which enhances a pilot’s vision in low-visibility conditions, was the first of its kind to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. Gulfstream’s PlaneView® cockpit, with its signature cursor control devices, is considered by many pilots to be the most technologically advanced cockpit in aviation. Last year, Gulfstream was the first business-jet manufacturer to offer in-flight ultra-high-speed Internet access through its Gulfstream Broadband Multi-Link system. Gulfstream’s R&D organization also designs, analyzes and tests special mission aircraft used for various types of missions, including search and rescue, reconnaissance and high-altitude laboratories.
The business-jet manufacturer will lease a newly constructed 100,000-square-foot building – to be named the Gulfstream Research & Development Center – that will form an integral part of Gulfstream’s Savannah-based headquarters.
“Since we first opened our doors in Savannah 38 year ago, our business has grown significantly. In fact, we’ve added four other manufacturing sites and eleven service center sites located throughout the United States as well as a service center in England ,” added Moss. “Now it’s time to expand our research and development organization. Both the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDED) and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) were instrumental in our selection of Savannah as the site for this expansion.”
Gulfstream, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has entered into a five-year lease agreement with North Point Real Estate of Savannah, Ga., the developer that also is managing the building’s construction.
Gulfstream employs some 7,000 people, of which approximately 5,200 work at the company’s Savannah facility.
