100th Ultra-Long-Range Business Jet Begins Manufacture Two Years After the First G550 Entered Service
SAVANNAH, Ga., Oct. 17, 2005 – Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has started production of the 100 th G550 business-jet aircraft, at its manufacturing facility in Savannah, Ga., just over two years after the first G550 entered service.
"The G550 has exceeded our expectations in terms of customer acceptance," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "The jet’s design, performance, reliability, safety record and outstanding cabin comfort have allowed it to stand out from the competition. It is by far the most popular business jet in its class."
The G550 is the successor to the GV, which entered service in December 1996 and was the first ultra-long-range business jet to market. Some 193 GVs were manufactured before the production line transitioned to the new G550 two years ago.
The 100 th large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550 is scheduled to receive its Certificate of Airworthiness from the Federal Aviation Administration in February 2006, thereby completing its initial phase of manufacture. During the next four months it will be painted and outfitted in preparation for the scheduled delivery in June 2006 to its owner, NetJets International a subsidiary of NetJets Inc., a Berkshire-Hathaway company and world leader in private aviation options.
The National Aeronautic Association selected the G550 development team as the 2003 recipient of the Robert J. Collier Trophy for its work on the G550 business jet.
