SAVANNAH, Ga., May 21, 2004 – The Gulfstream G550 continues to set city-pair speed records, most recently between Westhampton Beach, N.Y., and Beijing in the People’s Republic of China. The May 18 flight, which passed one degree south (60 miles) of the North Pole, is the 12th city-pair speed record established by the large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550 since the business-jet aircraft entered service in September 2003.
The G550 took off at 3:34 p.m. EST from Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, N.Y. It flew north through Canada, passing close to the North Pole into Russian airspace, across Mongolia and into Chinese airspace before landing 13 hours and 15 minutes later at Beijing International Airport. With four crew members and four passengers onboard, the G550 flew some 6,300 nautical miles at an average cruise speed of .80 Mach.
"With this new city-pair speed record, the G550 exemplifies how destinations, once considered to be days, if not worlds apart, are now separated by only hours," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "With each new record-setting flight, the G550 further establishes itself as the premier business tool for today’s corporations that have interests in locations throughout the world."
In another record-setting flight in December, a G550 flew from Savannah, Ga., to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, setting a distance record of 6,554 nautical miles that shattered the previous ground distance record of 6,132 nautical miles set by a Gulfstream V in 1997.
Gulfstream G550 Senior International Captain Larry Mueller and Production Test Pilot Carl Schomburg, along with U.S. Aviation Pilot Craig Lowe, flew the Polar route, cutting two hours from the traditional New York-to-Beijing route. Kim Buckelew served as flight attendant for the four passengers and three flight crew members.
Introduced in October 2002, the G550 is the winner of the 2003 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the most prestigious aviation award in North America. Technologically unsurpassed, the G550 includes the state-of-the-art PlaneView flight deck, Head-Up Display and FAA-certified Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS). The flagship of the Gulfstream business jet fleet, the G550 comes fully equipped and can accommodate up to 18 passengers, fly at a maximum speed of .885 Mach and cruise at a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet.
Designed for passenger comfort and productivity, the G550 cabin environment features 100 percent fresh air every two minutes, a maximum cabin altitude of 6,000 feet and 14 signature oval windows that allow ample sunlight by which to work. Combined, these features significantly reduce jet lag and in-flight fatigue.
Owners of the G550 can choose from multiple cabin layouts and several customer-preferred option packages that best meet their travel requirements. Customers also can choose to customize the interior to satisfy their unique outfitting needs and reflect their individual style.
