GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM OPTION PROVIDES GV COPILOTS SAME VIEW AS PILOT
Auxiliary Monitor Available for Installation on GIV-SP by End of Year
SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 8, 2003 -- Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), now offers Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS) customers with an option that enables copilots to view via a Head-Down Display (HDD) the same real-world images the pilot views on the Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD).
Certified by the Federal Aviation Administration in May, the option consists of a device that splits the imaging signal from the Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera mounted on the underside of the large-cabin, ultra-long-range GV aircraft. The splitter sends the signal simultaneously to both the pilot's HUD and the copilot's HDD - a 5.6" Rosen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor that also can be used to receive AirShow weather and mapping information. By the end of this year, this option also will be available as a retrofit on large-cabin, long-range GIV-SP aircraft equipped with EVS.
"The Gulfstream EVS works so well in low-visibility conditions that the pilot is able to see the runway light structure well before the copilot," said Randy Gaston, vice president, flight operations, Gulfstream. "By adding the EVS HDD monitor, the copilot can quickly verify that the runway lights have actually been acquired and thus, greatly improve crew resource management in the cockpit."
Still the only system of its kind certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Gulfstream EVS enables flight crews to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., EVS also helps crews avoid runway incursions and hazards that would otherwise not be easily visible.
Improving situational awareness goes one step further for Gulfstream business jets equipped with both the PlaneView flight deck and EVS. The same images the pilot views through the Head-Up Display can be projected onto either of the two14-inch LCD flight displays found on the copilot side of the cockpit. This capability will be offered free-of-charge to existing EVS-equipped G500-series aircraft owners in the first quarter of 2004.
Additionally, passengers can witness first-hand the effectiveness of EVS through mounted television screens in the cabin. With EVS imagery in the cabin, passengers can compare what they can't see outside their cabin window, with what the pilots can see from within the cockpit.
Gulfstream EVS currently is available as a retrofit on the large cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream V, the large-cabin, long-range GIV-SP, the large-cabin, long-range G400 and the large-cabin, mid-range G300 business jets.
For new production aircraft, Gulfstream offers its EVS as standard equipment on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550. Additionally, the Gulfstream EVS is optional equipment on the G500, G400 and the G300 business jets.
