GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM™ - FIRST OF ITS KIND TO BE INCLUDED IN FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION AIRCRAFT TYPE CERTIFICATE FAA
Certification Recognizes Gulfstream EVS as Standard Equipment on the Gulfstream G550
SAVANNAH, Ga., Aug. 18, 2003 -- Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), recently received the first aircraft model Type Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that includes an Enhanced Vision System (EVS) as standard equipment on an aircraft.
Issued August 14, 2003, the FAA Type Certificate for Gulfstream's newest business jet - the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550 - includes the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System, a first in the history of aviation.
"With this certification, every G550 produced will have the Gulfstream EVS as an integral component within its flight deck," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "By significantly improving the pilot's situational awareness in reduced visibility conditions, the Gulfstream EVS has established itself as the next essential cockpit improvement, picking up where TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System) and EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System) have left off."
Also available as an option on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G500™, the Gulfstream EVS has been available as a retrofit on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range GV® business jet since September 2001 when the FAA issued the first EVS Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) - the first of its kind for such a system. In December 2002, the FAA issued a second STC, which allowed the EVS to be retrofitted onto the large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV®.
Since its introduction to the aviation industry two years ago, the Gulfstream EVS has been installed on 42 GV aircraft and three GIV aircraft and approximately 40 systems are back-ordered. It remains the only system of its kind to be certified by the FAA.
The Gulfstream EVS incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., the system addresses many of the issues raised in the FAA's Safer Skies Agenda. The system enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. The Gulfstream EVS also helps crews avoid runway incursion and hazards that would otherwise not be easily visible.
