GULFSTREAM EXPLORES GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM™ FOR G200™ BUSINESS JET EVS
Demand Remains Strong with New Aircraft Purchases and Retrofits
SAVANNAH, Ga., May 6, 2003 - Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), is exploring the adaptability of its Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS) for use on its large-cabin, mid-range Gulfstream G200 business jet.
Already available on six other Gulfstream business jet models, the Gulfstream EVS is the first vision-enhancing system of its kind certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Included as standard equipment on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550™ business jet, the award-winning EVS also is available on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range G500™, the large-cabin, long-range G400™ and the large-cabin, mid-range G300™. Also available as a retrofit on the large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV-SP® and the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream V®, EVS continues to experience strong demand from new and existing Gulfstream business jet aircraft owners.
"The strong demand for the EVS with our other aircraft models is an indication that this safety-enhancing system would translate well with G200 customers and operators," said Bryan Moss, president, Gulfstream. "In adapting the EVS to the G200, we are exploring a smaller camera that will preserve the jet's aerodynamic properties and innovative ways of installing the Head-Up Display and other EVS equipment in the smaller G200 cockpit - while maintaining the same vision-enhancing capability pilots experience with our other models."
To date, the Gulfstream EVS has been installed on 34 large-cabin, ultra-long-range
Gulfstream V (GV) aircraft since the system was certified in October 2001. EVS was first installed on a GIV-SP in August 2002 following its integration with the GIV-SP Honeywell SPZ8400 flight deck. In December 2002, the FAA certified the GIV-compatible EVS and, in March, Gulfstream delivered the first GIV-SP outfitted with EVS.
Of the current 40-system backlog, half of the systems have been ordered for GV aircraft and half have been ordered for GIV/GIV-SP aircraft.
The Gulfstream EVS incorporates a specially designed forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., the system addresses many of the issues raised in the FAA's Safer Skies Agenda. The system enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding conditions. The Gulfstream EVS also helps crews to avoid runway incursion and hazards.
To date, FlightSafety International, provider of aviation training throughout the world, has trained more than 175 pilots on the Gulfstream EVS.
The Gulfstream EVS has been recognized by both the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and by Flight Safety Foundation for its significant contributions to aviation safety.
