GULFSTREAM V SETS TWO CITY-PAIR SPEED RECORDS
Ultra-Long-Range GV Completes World-Record Flights Between North America and Asia
SAVANNAH, Ga., Jan. 8, 2003 - Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announced today that the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream V (GV) business jet aircraft set two city-pair world speed records Nov. 6 and 7 between North American and Asia.
Piloting the GV was Capt. Sean Sheldon and pilots Ahmed Ragheb and John Mullican served as copilots.
The National Aeronautic Association recognized both world-record flights for Speed Over a Recognized Course between the following cities:
The Swiss-based Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) has officially acknowledged both GV records as world records.
The GV Nashville-to-Tokyo flight established a "best in all categories," meaning its record is the best among all aircraft within 21 weight-class categories (the GV falls within the C-1.L weight category).
On the Nashville-to-Tokyo leg, the aircraft flew against 100 miles-per-hour headwinds. At still air distance, the aircraft would easily have covered more than 6,200 nautical miles, proving once again that the performance of the Gulfstream V business jet aircraft is second to none in its class.
The 4,866-nautical-mile Tokyo-to-Los Angeles flight was flown on a near-perfect day in just under 8 ½ hours.
Sheldon participated in another GV record-breaking flight between Tokyo and Washington D.C. earlier this year, breaking a 44-year-old record previously held by a U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker.
The holder of more than 80 world records, the GV seats up to 19 passengers and offers one of the longest ranges in its class - up to 6,500 nautical miles. At speeds of up to .885 Mach and a cruising altitude of up to 51,000 feet, the GV became The World Standard™ upon its entry into service in 1997. The same year the aircraft won the prestigious Collier Trophy. The GV fleet includes 168 aircraft, which have logged more than 197,000 flight hours and more than 92,000 takeoffs and landings.
