GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM WINS FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL AEROSPACE INDUSTRY AWARD, 2002
First Enhanced Vision System to be Certified by Federal Aviation Administration
Savannah, GA, March 7, 2002 - The Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System™(EVS) has been selected by Flight International for a 2002 Aerospace Industry Award in the Avionics and Electronic category. The award was presented at a special ceremony held in conjunction with Asian Aerospace 2002 in Singapore.
The Gulfstream EVS is the result of more than seven years of research and development and was certified for use on the Gulfstream V business jet aircraft in September 2001. The certification, the first of its kind for such a system, was the culmination of some 525-flight test hours and more than 650 approaches in varying weather conditions.
The citation for the award stated, in part, that the Gulfstream EVS provides the pilot, during conditions of reduced visibility and at night, with an optical mage that includes runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and the surrounding landscape. The capability of EVS also helps crews avoid runway incursions and similar hazards. The Gulfstream EVS effectively addresses many of the concerns listed in the FAA's Safer Skies Initiative with regard to pilot situational awareness.
The Gulfstream EVS will be integrated into the Gulfstream V-SPs PlaneView™ cockpit. In addition, it is available on all new ultra-long range Gulfstream V business jet aircraft and is also available as a retrofit. Certification for the GIV/IV-SP aircraft is expected by the end of this year.
"Gulfstream is delighted to have been selected as a winner in Flight International's prestigious Aerospace Industry Awards," said Pres Henne, Senior Vice President, Programs, Gulfstream Aerospace. "I am proud of the Gulfstream people who were on the team that researched, developed and tested the EVS. They all share in the credit, which this award represents. More importantly, they all know they have contributed significantly to making flying even safer for Gulfstream customers," he added.
