GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM ON SCHEDULE FOR THIRD QUARTER CERTIFICATION
First Installation on Operational Aircraft Due in 4th Quarter 2001
Geneva, Switzerland, April 18, 2001 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation will begin the final flight testing phase of its Enhanced Vision System (EVS) within the next 60 days. Certification by the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to occur during the third quarter 2001.
Earlier last month, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) which delineated a series of specific additional requirements that Gulfstream will be required to meet before the EVS system could be certified.
"Even though we don't agree with the FAA on the need for a special condition, this requirement is not going to delay the program," said Mike Mena, Gulfstream V-SP Program Manager. "We do not anticipate any problems meeting the special conditions defined in the NPRM."
Gulfstream will begin final flight testing in June 2001 with the FAA certification flights starting in July 2001. Completion of Phase I (100 foot minimums) of the certification process will occur in the third quarter. The initial EVS installation on a customer aircraft will be completed in the fourth quarter.
Mena anticipates that EVS will be approved for approaches to 50 foot minimums within 24 - 36 months.
EVS, for use exclusively on Gulfstream aircraft, is a pioneering device that incorporates a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera, manufactured by Kollsman, which projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell head-up display (HUD). The system will greatly enhance the safety and utility of Gulfstream aircraft during landings in poor weather and in avoiding terrain in low visibility conditions.
The image provides the pilot with the ability to see through fog and darkness, avoid terrain, and safely land the aircraft at airports with very low visibility conditions. The cryogenically cooled sensor used on the EVS is particularly sensitive to the infrared radiation content of standard runway lights.
